Insensitive Semantics by Herman Cappelen

Book Description

"Insensitive Semantics" is an overview of and contribution to the debates about how to accommodate context sensitivity within a theory of human communication, investigating the effects of context on communicative interaction and, as a corollary, what a context of utterance is and what it is to be in one. This work: provides detailed and wide-ranging overviews of the central positions and arguments surrounding contextualism; addresses broad and varied aspects of the distinction between the semantic and non-semantic content of language; defends a distinctive and explanatorily powerful combination of semantic minimalism and speech act pluralism; and, confronts core problems which not only run to the heart of philosophy of language and linguistics, but which arise in epistemology, metaphysics, and moral philosophy as well.

Oxford Handbook of Philosophical Methodology by Herman Cappelen Oxford Handbook of Philosophical Methodology, Hardback (June 2016)

This is the most comprehensive book ever published on philosophical methodology. A team of leading philosophers present original essays on various aspects of how philosophy should be and is done. They explore broad traditions and approaches, topics in philosophical methodology, and the interconnections between philosophy and neighbouring fields.

Context and Communication by Herman Cappelen Context and Communication, Paperback (April 2016)

Context and Communication provides an introduction to a central theme in the study of language: the idea that what we say (or ask, or think) depends on the context of speech and thought. It explores key data, questions, concepts, and theories of context sensitivity, and is written to be accessible to those with no prior knowledge of the subject.

Liberating Content by Herman Cappelen Liberating Content, Hardback (December 2015)

This volume brings together two influential series of papers by Herman Cappelen and Ernie Lepore on language, communication, and contexts. These are the papers which introduced speech act pluralism and semantic minimalism, and they provide the foundation for one of the most powerful attacks on contextualism in contemporary philosophy.

Inessential Indexical by Herman Cappelen Inessential Indexical, Paperback (December 2015)

Cappelen and Dever present a forceful challenge to the standard view that perspective, and in particular the perspective of the first person, is a philosophically deep aspect of the world. Their goal is not to show that we need to explain indexical and other perspectival phenomena in different ways, but to show that the entire topic is an illusion.
