Insider Lending by Naomi R. Lamoreaux
Book DescriptionThe term insider lending conveys an aura of abuse and corruption, of unethical, if not illegal, behaviour. In early nineteenth-century New England, however, insider lending was an integral aspect of the banking system. Not only was the practice an accepted fact of economic life, but, as Naomi R. Lamoreaux argues, it enabled banks (at least in this particular historical context) to play an important role in financing economic development. As the banking system evolved over the course of the century, however, lending practices became more impersonal and professional. Ironically, the information problems banks faced when they began to conduct more and more of their business at arm's length forced them to concentrate on providing short-term loans to commercial borrowers and to give up financing economic development. This book was first published in 1994.

Understanding Long-run Economic Growth, Hardback (September 2011)
Explores the relationship between economic conditions, growth, and inequality, with a focus on how the monopolization of resources by the political elite limits incentives for ordinary people to invest in human capital or technological discovery.
Financing Innovation in the United States, 1870 to Present, Paperback (September 2009)
Leading economists and economic historians offer case studies and theoretical perspectives that fill a longstanding gap in the existing literature on technology-driven industrial development, discussing the interaction of finance and technological innovation in the American economy since the Second Industrial Revolution.
Learning by Doing in Markets, Firms and Countries, Paperback (February 1999)
Drawing out the underlying economics in business history, this text focuses on learning processes and the development of competitively valuable asymmetries. It shows that organizations learn that this process can be organized effectively, which can have major implications for how competition works.
