Insider's Guide to Power in Australia by Jack the Insider by Richard Fidler
Jack the Insider is a highly placed, dedicated servant of the nation with close ties to leading figures in politics, business and the union movement. Jack also maintains regular contact with his mates in the media and the military-industrial complex, but has little time for the wowsers, do-gooders and no-hopers who infest our parliaments these days. Jack has been present at crucial moments in world history, ready to grapple with huge events and give them a gentle nudge. On 11 November 1975, it was Jack who handed Gough the loudhailer. When Malcolm Fraser lost his strides in Memphis, Jack lent him a spare pair. The 1984 Fine Cotton Ring-In? Jack was there too. His real identity must remain unknown for obvious reasons. THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO POWER IN AUSTRALIA is Jack's 'access all areas' account of the dark recesses of power in our country, as told to Richard Fidler and Peter Hoysted. A couple of sheilas did the typing.

Book Review: Insider's Guide to Power in Australia by Jack the Insider by Richard Fidler - Reviewed by Boomert (12 Jan 2010) (Richard Fidler & Peter Hoysted, Random House, $32.95, ISBN 9781741666892, November) **** ‘Taking the piss’ is a deeply Australian idea. It roots lie at the core of larrikinism, that somewhat dated concept first recognised by the likes of Lawson and C J Dennis. It consists of finding humor in our darkest moments, and is allied with a deep disrespect for authority. Latterly, we’ve shunned the idea, seeing it as unsophisticated and old-fashioned, and not clever enough to sustain us in the iPod age. And many attempts at it fall flat. (Think of more recent movies by Paul Hogan.) But this book is an exception. Written under the pseudonym of Jack the Insider, this is a send-up of all aspects of Australian history and society. And it’s laugh-out-loud funny. The text is irreverent, dry, and well researched, and punctuated by great photos. The book is sharp and politically incorrect about many aspects of life in ‘the biggest South Pacific island... RICHARD FIDLER is a writer and broadcaster who presents The Conversation Hour on ABC local radio in Sydney and Brisbane. As a member of comedy trio the Doug Anthony Allstars he performed all over the world and co-hosted shows for ABC TV, the BBC and Channel 4. Since then he has presented series including Race Around the World, Aftershock and The Hub. Richard met Jack the Insider when he called upon Jack's services to fix up a few zoning difficulties he was having with his holiday house, and to destroy the reputations of the twenty people who were ahead of him in the queue to fill in for Tony Delroy on ABC Radio. PETER HOYSTED is an author and humorist who never quite cut it as a true crime writer. He is a regular contributor to Fidler's afternoon radio program. His drunken ramblings have appeared in the pages of The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald and in other pornographic publications, in between the pink bits. He is dedicated to making the world a sillier place. |
