Irrespektiv by Kendell Geers
Book DescriptionSouth African artist Kendell Geers (1968, Johannesburg) has become one of the most controversial artists of our times. By blowing up museum walls and burning down statues, Geers has made a name for himself as aesthetic terrorist. Fear, violence, danger and sex are omnipresent in Geers' work. In concert with a European travelling exhibition, Geers presents "Irrespectiv", a fully illustrated monograph highlighting the main aspects of his oeuvre. The catalogue covers installations, photographs, drawings and performances from the beginning of his career until the present. "Irrespectiv" includes texts by Lieven de Cauter and Rudi Laermans, Christine Macel, Warren Siebrits and Andrea Vinassa, and an interview between Jerome Sans and Kendell Geers. It is published by BOM publishers in cooperation with the S.M.A.K. (Ghent, Belgium), B.P.S.22 (Charleroi, Belgium), the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (Gateshead, UK), Musee d' art contemporain de Lyon (France) and MART (Rovereto, Italy).

Author Biography - Kendell Geers
A thorn in the flesh of many curators, South African artist Kendell Geers ( 1968, Johannesburg) has become one of the most controversial artists of our times. By blowing up museum walls and burning down statues, Geers has made a name for himself as aesthetic terrorist. Fear, violence, danger and sex are omnipresent in Geers' work.Geers studied fine arts at the Wits (university of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg). After his studies, he refused conscription and to avoid arrest for his dissent he fled to New York, where he worked as a studio assistant to Richard Prince. After the release of Nelson Mandela in February 1990, Geers returned to South Africa. His work often refers to the political issues and the violence of his country of birth. Over the years Geers has examined the increment of violence in the mass media and how images of violence have become banalised through media-centric methods of representation.Over the last years Kendell Geers has been participating in major group shows such as Documenta XI, The Carnegie International and the biennials in Venice, Munster, Berlin, Johannesburg and Taipei, and has held solo exhibitions in London, Paris, Dijon and Stuttgart.Kendell Geers now lives and works in Brussels.
