0 star rating by Boomert - It's Yr Life by Tempany Deckert and Tristan Bancks 16 Jan 2010
Milla and Sim are year ten students who are given a school assignment to initiate and cultivate an educational email relationship with each other. Milla lives in Los Angeles in a dysfunctional family that is falling apart due to her violent father, her passive mother and her pot-smoking younger brother. Sim, fostered out to a ‘freegan’ (ie. they don’t buy anything) family in Byron Bay, is a confused teenager who is pursuing his film-making dreams. Milla and Sim are both unenthusiastic about their task, and their initial correspondence, though honest, is anything but cordial. As their relationship develops and they become good friends, they provide the emotional support that each is missing from their lives. Occasionally It’s Yr Life captures the challenges and problems that teenagers face; the manner in which it deals with the breakdown of Milla’s family is both realistic and engrossing. Unfortunately, this is all but negated by Sim’s story, which is contrived, perplexing and unsatisfying. The pace is inconsistent and the sporadic use of very basic ‘text-speak’ does not seem particularly genuine. This is an easy, topical read, but is ultimately too insubstantial for a savvy teenage demographic that deserves better than this.
