Journey Through Britain by David St.John Thomas

Book Description

In his 'thinking traveller's tour', David St John Thomas journeys by rail and 'Little Car' around Britain, exploring the fascinating and diverse character of Britain today. He reflects on Britain, Britishness, the British people and how they have changed, not always for the worse, over the fifty-odd years he has known them as an author and a publisher. Taking in places as various as beaches, mountain moors, industrial and early Christian sites, great hotels, art galleries, canals and cycleways, meeting people - famous ones, friends, gardeners, railwaymen, craftsmen, bus conductors - who enrich his journey with their stories and observations, and drawing on literature and history, he discovers the true heartbeat of the country. The result is a narrative that surprises, amuses and engages, as well as offering a treasure trove of facts, anecdotes and new perspectives on our extraordinary nation.

Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » Thomas has a cult following for his bestselling railway books, but here he spreads his travel net wider than the railways. The 'thinking man's travel writer' does travel by rail, of course, but he also takes the car and bus in his journeys to all corners of Britain in order to track down the nature of our land at the start of the 21st century. He finds that the doom-mongers of 30 and 40 years ago were too pessimistic by half. Much of the decline they predicted has never happened, and many of Britain's greatest treasures are now better protected than ever before. Thomas speaks to wonderful characters on moorlands and beaches, ancient Christian sites, in art galleries and on cycleways, and keeps the reader enchanted with a wealth of stories that reveal Britain and its people in all their glory. Most of those we meet are unsung heroes of life but we are also introduced to some famous personalities, such as TV astronomer Sir Patrick Moore. This is one of the great travel books and a must for anyone who loves these islands. (Kirkus UK)
