Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling
Book DescriptionAmong the best loved of all classics for children are the tales of Mowgli, the boy who learned the law of the jungle as he grew up among a pack of wolves in India's Seeonee Hills. First published in 1894, the book imagines a child living and flourishing in a community of animals - an idea that perhaps had its origin in Kipling's unhappy childhood. 'His stories are not animal stories in the realistic sense; they are wonderful, beautiful fairy tales, ' wrote Ernest Thompson Seton, the great Canadian naturalist. Kurt Wiese's illustrations, commissoned by the American firm of Doubleday in 1932, have never appeared in Britain before. An artist with a particular interest in animals and an amazing visual memory, he remembered all he had observed on his travels in the Far East during the early 1900s, first as a salesman in China and then as a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese.

Kipling's classic story of Mowgli, the boy who was raised by wolves in the Indian Jungle.
UK Kirkus Review » Children who have seen the film version of The Jungle Book will be captivated by the spell of Kipling's storytelling. Likewise the wonderful Just So Stories - How the Alphabet Became, The Elephant's Child, The Cat that Walked by Himself, How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin, the camel his hump, the leopard his spots and many more - never fail to delight. Both are given a fresh interpretation by Michael Foreman's black-and-white drawings and exquisite colour plates in these special editions. (8-12 yrs) (Kirkus UK)
US Kirkus Review » Printed on heavy, coated stock, with wide floral borders adding further notes of luxury, these three complete tales from Kipling's classic, with attendant verses, get both sumptuous packaging and a generous helping of small, finely detailed illustrations. This treatment not only captures the action and exotic locales, but, most expressively, the power and beauty of the wolves, Bagheera, Balloo and the other animals among whom young Mowgli is raised. As always, Kipling's measured prose and poetry is a treat to read alone or, especially, aloud; here the story of Mowgli's education in the Law of the Jungle, his first try at living among humankind, his kidnapping by the Monkey People, and his triumph over the tiger Shere Khan will keep young audiences rapt. An ideal replacement for the edition of these tales illustrated by Inga Moore (1992), and other edited versions. (Fiction. 9-11) (Kirkus Reviews)
