Just What Mama Needs by Sharlee Glenn

Book Description

When Abby plays dress-up each day of the week, she's always just what her mama needs. After all, a detective will definitely find that missing sock, and a pirate can help Mama swab the decks...er, kitchen floor, that is! Household chores are wondrously transformed into magical activities in this imaginative book that showcases the days of the week and celebrates self-esteem.

US Kirkus Review » On Monday, Abby dresses as a pirate - just the ticket, says Mama, to help swab the kitchen floor. On Tuesday, she's a detective, perfect for pulling missing socks and underwear from the wash. Cast as floppy eared pooches in Hirao's cheery collage-and-paint scenes, Abby and her ever-inventive Mama go through an entire week of familiar domestic tasks together. Then on Sunday Abby stumps her parent by dressing in a favorite shirt: " 'Are you an artist?' 'No,' said Abby. 'A drummer?' 'No,' said Abby. 'A zookeeper? A yodeler?' " No, she finally declares, " 'Today I am . . . ME!' " Mama responds with a hug and her own declaration that an "Abby" is what she needs most of all. As cozy as it can get without falling into gooey sentimentality, this playful colloquy probably won't change anyone's attitude about doing chores, but it may make them seem a little less onerous. Book Review: Just What Mama Needs by Sharlee Glenn - Reviewed by (15 Jan 2013)

Just what Mama needs is an excellent children’s book and one that rings true for just about every child in the world.

When young Abby wakes up she tells her mother what she wants to be, the list goes on and on and keeps changing depending on where and what they are doing. From personal experience kids love to dress up and pretend to be different things, like doctors, fireman, bus drivers.

The illustrations are bold and colorful and will captivate the child. The wording flows nicely and will be easy to follow for the first reader just starting out.
