King Zog by Jason Tomes
Book DescriptionKing Zog was a curiosity, and so he has remained: the most unusual European monarch of the twentieth century, a man entirely without royal connections who created his own kingdom. By contemporaries, he was variously labelled 'the last ruler of romance', 'an appalling gangster', 'the modern Napoleon', the finest patriot' and 'frankly a cad'. Even today his reputation is disputed, but Zog was undeniably one of the foremost figures in Albanian history. Though notorious for cut-throat political intrigue, he promised to bring order and progress to a land that had long known little of either. 'It was I who made Albania,' he claimed.

Books By Author Jason Tomes
Albania, Hardback (August 2012)
This important new edition presents Konitza's short history of Albania up to the exile of Ahmet Zogo - 'King Zog' - in 1939 together with some of Konitza's other key writings, analysing of the character of the Albanian people as well as their language, literature and religion.
Albania's Greatest Friend, Hardback (May 2011)
With a Preface by Noel Malcolm. Impeccably aristocratic and eccentric in a uniquely English tradition, Aubrey Herbert was at first sight an incongruous champion of Albanian nationalism, to say the least. This title charts Herbert's involvement with Albania over the course of his life, in his own words, through his own extensive diaries and letters.
Albanian Letters, Hardback (October 2008)
Explores the implications of the key political events of this period (for example, the formation of the Albanian League in 1878). This title also paints a picture of the country's complex social and cultural make-up. It looks at how Albanians' views of their homeland were affected by developments taking place at the time.
Balfour and Foreign Policy, Paperback (May 2002)» View all books by Jason Tomes
The first full analysis of the international thought of the British statesman A. J. Balfour (1848-1930).
