Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » 'I never read anything that affected my feelings more strongly' wrote Sir Walter Scott 'Its impression on me can never be told' said Charles Dickens. Both men allude to the narrative of Lady de Lancy - her own written account of how she saught out and nursed her mortally wounded husband, in the peasant's hovel to which he had been carried from the battlefields of Waterloo. This deeply moving tale lies at the centre of David Miller's book. Preceeding this authentic text (discovered in a dusty trunk in 1999) are the remarkable stories of the dying man, Sir William Howe de Lancy (the first truely professional staff officer in the British Army) close friend of Wellington - a handsome experienced soldier from an American based family stemming from Huguenot refugees and his 20 year old wife Magdalene Hall, daughter of lowland Scottish intellectuals who had been gently reared and 'would have been at home in a Jane Austen novel'. They're two totally different people, separated by experience, background and years, met, fell in love, married and lost each other in the space of six months. The narrative itself, for all it's fascinating and emotionally harrowing detail, covers just three weeks. Miller is a military historian specializing in defence matters and he backs up this story of 'duty and devotion' with several chapters of history concerning the period, the family and it's descendants up to the death - also on the battlefield of Magdalene's great, great grandson in the second World War. Well written and researched though the book is, it would be of minor interest were it not for the narrative which shines out like a gem. Not only is it a heart breaking love story but also a vivid picture of warfare before the days of modern weapons or modern medicine. (Kirkus UK)
