Languages of Paradise by Maurice Olender
Book DescriptionMichel Foucault observed that 'the birth of philology attracted far less notice in the Western mind than did the birth of biology or political economy.' In this penetrating exploration of the origin of the discipline, Maurice Olender shows that philology left an indelible mark on Western visions of history and contributed directly to some of the most horrifying ideologies of the twentieth century.

We are All Cannibals, Hardback (April 2016)
L vi-Strauss measures the short distance between "complex" and "primitive" societies and finds a shared madness in the ways we enact myth, ritual, and custom. Yet he also locates a pure and persistent ethics that connects the center of Western civilization to far-flung societies and forces a reckoning with outmoded ideas of morality and reason.
Anthropology Confronts the Problems of the Modern World, Hardback (March 2013)
This first English translation of lectures Claude Levi-Strauss delivered in Tokyo in 1986 synthesizes his ideas about structural anthropology, critiques his earlier writings on civilization, and assesses the dilemmas of cultural and moral relativism, including economic inequality, religious fundamentalism, and genetic and reproductive engineering.
Race and Erudition, Hardback (August 2009)» View all books by Maurice Olender
19th century theories of race were meant to provide a comprehensive account of the history and evolution of civilizations. What they produced instead were the modern foundations for prejudice and its politics. The author investigates the links between erudition and race, showing the affinities between the social sciences and the concept of 'race'.
