Praise. Andrew McGahan has never been overburdened by it. He might have won the Vogel Award but that's for beginners. Last Drinks deals in very adult problems and it will vastly increase McGahan's readership. George Verney was a Brisbane journalist when organising crime was police business. But an inquiry has broken up the syndicates, and George's mates have gone quiet, gone south or gone to prison. Then Charlie, his first business partner, is found dead near the town where George lives. George sets out first to bury Charlie, and then to uncover the truth about his death. But the `whodunnit' is not played for cheap effects. George confronts the fears of his own private underworld. It is seedy and it is scary. Last Drinks wrestles with problems like love, addiction, hate and faith; and with conflicts of heart, politics and pain. This is territory you might think belonged in books like Power Without Glory or Brighton Rock. Last Drinks is a thrilling noir-ish cocktail of drama and dark laughter. It unfolds gracefully and is written with impressive craftsmanship, which are just two reasons why this book deserves real praise. Grunge is dead. Long live Andrew McGahan. Cheers.
