Description
Fay lives alone with her father on bleak, windswept Breaksea Island, but her isolated life takes a dramatic turn with the outbreak of World War I. Fay collects the messages of lonely soldiers heading to the front line. She is their last hope of getting messages telegraphed back home. After their departure for the battlefields of Egypt and Gallipoli, she follows their fortunes and continues her long-distance conversations with letters and postcards. Then one day, a single, sad telegram arrives, and the war is brought brutally home. Based on the true story of Faye Howe, this gentle tale brings to life the hardships of those left at home during the war - waiting, wondering, hoping. Drawing on fascinating archival material, and interweaving fact with fiction, award-winning author Dianne Wolfer deftly recreates this period in Australian history from the perspective of a young girl.

0 star rating by Boomert - Lighthouse Girl by Dianne Wolfer 18 Jan 2010
A hybrid of picture book and scrapbook, this is a story of substance for older readers, with a subtle history lesson woven in. With charming charcoal illustrations from Brian Simmonds, Lighthouse Girl is based on the real life of Fay Howe. Howe lived on Breaksea Island, off the coast of Albany, Western Australia, with her father, one of two lighthouse keepers, and Jacko, the donkey. Howe’s journal provides the inspiration for this book. When WWI is declared, Fay has a bird’s eye view of the troop ships leaving. With her knowledge of semaphore and Morse code, she telegraphs messages back home for the homesick soldiers. Fay then continues a correspondence with some of the soldiers, learning more of the world and the war. The semaphore and Morse code alphabets are included, as well as newspaper clippings, photos and postcards. Details of Fay’s day-to-day life, including dependency on monthly supply boats, all help to bring history alive for the current generation. The style won’t intimidate reluctant readers, and will maintain the interest of advanced readers. ANZAC details are interspersed throughout the narrative, and may encourage some readers to research further on this topic.
