Little Brother by Cory Doctorow
Book DescriptionThe ultimate tale of teen rebellion - one seventeen-year-old against the surveillance state. Big Brother is watching you. Who's watching back? Marcus is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works - and how to work the system. Smart, fast and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school's intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems. But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison, where they're mercilessly interrogated for days. When the DHS finally releases them, Marcus discovers that his city has become a police state, where every citizen is treated like a potential terrorist. He knows no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: to take down the DHS himself.

Book Review: Little Brother by Cory Doctorow - Reviewed by Sheepcoate (01 Nov 2012)
Little Brother draws you in right from the start, even though targeted at Young Adults, there is much to be enjoyed by the mature reader.
Like most Cory Doctorow books, this novel no exception, it centers around high tech privacy and digital freedom from the government. The author takes you on quite an adventure and goes into quite detailed explanations of hacking, programming and digital exploitation's. The non IT savvy reader may get a little lost with all the tech talk; however explanations and details are very well explained.
The action is consistent and the pace is fast moving, looking forward to more in the series.
Book Review: Little Brother by Cory Doctorow - Reviewed by RosHH (25 Feb 2010)
Little Brother is my favourite of Doctorow's novels, but that's not why I would recommend it for any school library. As with all his novels, Doctorow relies on factoids and descriptions of current technology and innovations to bulk out his prose and support the bulk of his plot. But in this book, it is a wonderful thing.
In a palatable and accessible way the teen protagonist exposes readers to issues of cyber safety, online trust, and Open Source software. As many young people often consume rather than learn new technologies without analysing or assessing risks, Little Brother will be for many the gateway into seeking alternative software and developing secure online behaviour.
On top of all that, it's an interesting story that is gripping, empowering and compelling. I was so emotionally invested in the story that I almost ran around my house shouting "Don't trust anyone over 25" exultantly. I'm glad I didn't; my housemates are...
