Loren Eiseley by Hilda Raz

Book Description

Born, raised, and educated in Lincoln, Nebraska, Loren Eiseley (1907-77) was a highly respected writer and poet best known for explaining complex scientific concepts in poems easily read and understood by the general public. Much of his work covered anthropology, ecology, and human evolution, topics in which Eiseley himself was extensively educated. Loren Eiseley collects essays and remembrances of his work by friends and academics. Throughout this volume, Eiseley is praised as a brilliant thinker, accomplished writer, and esteemed man of science who drew inspiration from his midwestern upbringing and worked to bring science into the mainstream at a time when its understanding was restricted largely to those working directly in the field. Decades after his departure from the world he sought to understand, Eiseley is lauded for beautifully joining the worlds of science and literature.

Arranged Marriage by Hilda Raz Arranged Marriage, Paperback (August 2015)

With her characteristic music and precision, Dubrow's prose poems delve unflinchingly into a mother's story of trauma and captivity. The poet proves that truth telling and vision can give meaning to the gravest situations, allowing women to create a future on their own terms.

Self-Portrait with Spurs and Sulfur by Hilda Raz Self-Portrait with Spurs and Sulfur, Paperback (July 2015)

Part fun-house hall of mirrors in its distorted and dizzying central narrative, part spaghetti western, and part prayer, Self-Portrait with Spurs and Sulfur is an exploration into the possibilities of storytelling. Through persona poems and odes, the collection argues that the muddier the narrative, the closer the story gets to truth.

Heresies by Hilda Raz Heresies, Paperback (July 2015)

An invocation of Latin American and Caribbean culture, history, and spirituality. Through free verse and poetic forms, the collection is visually charged and sonically rich. The poems incorporate history, legend, and magical realism to create a cross-cultural baroque feeling. Heresies is witty, probing, transgressive, and carnivalesque.

Crossing Over by Hilda Raz Crossing Over, Paperback (June 2015)

Long's work begs to be read aloud in order to savour the rich language and rhythm she instils in each poem. She explores the beauty of specific bridges while employing them as a metaphor for crossings to death (a sister's suicide), eros, and art. Part elegy, the book also explores living, remembering, and celebrating.
