Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » The ghost of Rider-Haggard hangs over the opening of this book as Robin Brown-Lowe describes his childhood explorations of the mysterious stone structures (each attached to abandoned gold mines) that litter the country now known as Zimbabwe. Brown-Lowe conjures up ancient priests and bloodthirsty rituals as he describes how, on one memorable occasion, the walls spoke to him, leaving him with a lifelong fascination for these strange structures. Brown-Lowe soon discards the traditional 'romantic' view of an Africa awash with gold and exotic explorers to concentrate on trying to discover the origins of Zimbabwe culture. With an obvious affection for the country he has lived in for many years, Brown-Lowe does his best to identify the builders of the 15,000 derelict stone buildings that can be seen from the air in Zimbabwe. (Zimbabwe itself means 'stone building'.) With possibilities ranging from the Phoenicians to the Egyptians to the 'lost tribe of Israel', Brown-Lowe tirelessly follows up every lead as he seeks to prove that the gold mines of Zimbabwe provided the Egyptian Pharaohs with gold and furnished Solomon with his treasure 'greater than avarice'. He is on firmer ground when he demonstrates how the rich resources of Zimbabwe have left it vulnerable to exploitation from both black and white invaders. Many of Brown-Lowe's theories are open to conjecture, even those where he claims 'incontrovertible DNA evidence', and the book is so densely packed with history, politics and personalities that, like Africa itself, it is difficult to navigate at times. However, Brown-Lowe ably demonstrates how the truth about the origins of Zimbabwe has been rewritten countless times to suit the political interests of those in charge, whatever their colour or nationality.
