Luther and Calvin on Secular Authority by Martin Luther
Book DescriptionMartin Luther and John Calvin were the principal 'magistral' Reformers of the sixteenth-century: they sought to enlist the cooperation of rulers in the work of reforming the Church. However, neither regarded the relationship between Reformed Christians and the secular authorities as comfortable or unproblematic. The two pieces translated here, Luther's On Secular Authority and Calvin's On Civil Government, constitute their most sustained attempts to find the proper balance between these two commitments. Despite their mutual respect, there were wide divergences between them. Luther's On Secular Authority would later be cited en bloc in favour of religious toleration, whereas Calvin envisaged secular authority as an agency for the compulsory establishment of the external conditions of Christian virtue and the suppression of dissent. The introduction, glossary, chronology and bibliography contained in this volume locate the texts in the broader context of the theology and political thinking of their authors.

Sermons for Lent and Easter, Paperback (February 2017)
This book offers a collection of Martin Luther s most important sermons for Lent and Easter, Ascension Day, Pentecost Sunday, and Trinity Sunday. Each sermon for this liturgical season features Scripture readings, and represents the heart of Luther s thoughts on the Christian faith."
Bondage of the Will, 1525, Paperback (May 2016)
In autumn 1525, Luther wrote The Bondage of the Will as a response to humanist and theologian Erasmus of Rotterdam, who had criticized Luther's teachings in the diatribe on Free Will. Luther's argument on the matter of the bound and free will poses a challenge and an invitation for constructive contemporary theology.
Babylonian Captivity of the Church, 1520, Paperback (May 2016)
In his The Babylonian Captivity of the Church, Martin Luther set forth a reconsideration of the sacramental Christian life that centered on the word. His thesis is that the papacy had distorted the sacraments with its own traditions and regulations, transforming them into a system of control and coercion.
Treatise on Good Works, 1520, Paperback (May 2016)» View all books by Martin Luther
Timothy J. Wengert shows Luther's Treatise on Good Works to be one of the clearest introductions to Luther's reforming work and theology. Luther's goal was to commend a new, down-to-earth piety to all Christians through a radically different meaning of good works that would transform the way believers practiced their faith.
