UK Kirkus Review » It's extraordinary how this, above all, can be categorized as a love/hate relationship. And inevitably involving some form of sacrifice; it's still far from easy for motherhood and writing to co-exist. It's also depressing to find Germaine Greer's theory borne out: women writers, especially poets, are prone to suicidal tendencies (Plath, Woolf). Hardly surprising, when trapped in horrendous circumstances: Anna Wickham's husband had her put in an asylum after the publication of her poems; it was her mother's letters which made her take to her bed. Their brief biographies often demonstrate that these women led lives as fascinating, even harrowing, if not more so, as their writing. Overall, though, reading this is as uplifting an experience as it is disheartening, and perhaps the most intriguing thing is the dedication to the editor's mother-in-law. (Kirkus UK)
