Mulga Bill's Bicycle by A.B. Paterson
'Mulga Bill's Bicycle' was written by Banjo Paterson in 1896. It was written at a time when cycling was a relatively new and popular social activity. Cycles were ridden everywhere, including in the outback by shearers and other workers who needed to travel cheaply. It tells the hilarious story of Mulga Bill, who thinks he's much better at cycling than he turns out to be. A resounding crash sends him back to his original mode of transport - his trusty horse. Kilmeny and Deborah Niland's delightful illustrations catch the mood and humour of Paterson's verse with great spirit, and this book has become an enduring classic. Ages 8+

Paterson - Reviewed by rachthevego (18 Jan 2012) This book never ages. Classic Australian literature at it's best. It was around when my parents were kids and they read it to me and I now read it to my kids. OK so kids these days ride BMX not penny farthings and you may find yourself explaining that one of those things is actually a type of bike (from the charming illustrations) but the scary ride is going to continue to thrill them for generations anyway. My personal favourite thing about this book (not sure if the illustrator intended it or not) is the handlebar moustache on Mulga Bill.....matches his bike no??
