Mumbai's Nature Guide by Sunjoy Monga

Book Description

The Mumbai region in India is blessed with a variety of natural habitats, all within 150 km of the heart of the city. To the north lies Sanjay Gandhi National Park, probably the largest natural forest in any metropolis with over 13 million people. Contiguous with this hilly, verdant tract are the Manor and Wada regions towards the north. To the south of Mumbai are Murud-Janjira and Alibag and to its east lies the Matheran and Mahabaleshwar hills, an extension of the Western Ghats. Mangrove creeks, semi-grassland areas, saline, scrub and rocky zones constitute Mumbai's coastline. Within this perimeter thrives nearly 1000 species of flowering plants and at least 325 kinds of birds as well as 60 mammalian and 40 reptilian species. "Mumbai's Nature Guide" covers nearly all the natural habitats in this area. The book provides valuable insights into the history and topography, and the flora and fauna of the region, along with practical information such as maps, important trails and comprehensive lists.
