Description
A fifteen-year-old Australian farm boy lies about his age to enlist to war and is caught up in the horrors of World War I in Egypt and on the Western Front, where 5,500 Australian troops were lost in two days at Fromelles alone. This boy's story in this unique, stirring picture book is based on true stories of the 23 teenage soldiers, one only fourteen, who fought with the Australian army in World War I, as recorded at the Australian War Memorial (their names among a list of 60,000 Australian soldiers killed in that war). The author's grandfather was a boy soldier who, unlike the hero of the book, did survive to return home. Told in the boy's own simple language and with extracts from his letters home, the story is extremely moving and evocative of the real tragedy of that worst of all wars.

0 star rating by Boomert - My Mother’s Eyes by Mark Wilson 18 Jan 2010
This picture book is based on the true stories of the ‘boy soldiers’—some as young as 16—who fought with the Australian army in WWI. William, a 15-year-old farm boy, lies about his age so he can join the other recruits as they enlist for what many of them believe will be a ‘great adventure’, after Britain has declared war against Germany. The members of William’s battalion are first sent to Egypt to continue their training. They see the soldiers returning from Gallipoli, before receiving orders to leave for France. It is there, near the town of Bullecourt, that they enter the trenches and endure one of the worst winters for many years. There is not a lot of text in this book; rather, it is the full-page illustrations that do most of the talking, along with snippets from William’s letters home to his mother and grandfather. The overall effect is satisfying and reveals the bravery of these young men as they encounter the full horrors of war. This will be an ideal addition to libraries, and will enable teachers and parents to introduce young children to the topic of war and ANZAC Day in particular. Older students could use the pictures as starting points to discuss the effect of colour and technique on the text.
