Pyramids are one of the wonders of the ancient world. But one mystery remains - how were they built? Using archaeological records and the basic principles of engineering, Parry provides an account of the design history of the pyramids, the techniques and organization needed and insights into why the pyramids were designed as they were.
UK Kirkus Review » First published in 1978, this classic historical investigation has now been republished in paperback. Williamson writes with panache, bringing new angles to the well-worn subject of what really happened to Edward V and his younger brother Richard. She criticizes historians, who have jumped to facile conclusions, and challenges the reader to investigate that bit further and think that bit harder. She refuses to demonize Richard III, the uncle often accused of killing his young nephews to ensure his accession to the throne after the death of Edward IV, surveying the wider picture and taking a look at surrounding events and characters in 12 well-defined chapters. Chapter ten, for example, examines the case of Perkin Warbeck. Williamson asks whether he was Edward IV's second son, the legitimate Yorkist heir, or just a great pretender. She rejects flimsy romantic notions, and dismisses the tale that Warbeck appeared in Cork harbour, was hailed as the prince because of his striking likeness, and then simply went along with the idea. Williamson's conclusion - 'This is pure poppycock and should long ago have been recognised as such' - is typical of her rigorous, no-nonsense approach. As the absence of family trees or appendices may suggest, readers who make this book their first port of call in the 15th century risk being swamped by the array of colourful characters (the author provides a comprehensive bibliography for those who wish to find out more). But it is hard not to be drawn into this web of intrigue. Williamson hypothesizes and suggests, but rarely draws any firm conclusions, hoping fervently, as she professes in the epilogue, that a young, enquiring mind will take up the quest as new sources come to light.
