O Horrable Murder by Robert B. Partridge

Book Description

Three-and-a-half centuries ago Charles Stuart, King of England, Scotland, Ireland and France, stepped through a window of the Banqueting House in Whitehall onto a scaffold erected in the street. In front of a silent crowd he was executed by the severing of his head from his body. This volume provides an account of the trial and execution. The King was brought to trial by his own people. Regardless of the rights and wrongs of his actions before and during the Civil War, the events of his last days show him to have been a man who believed absolutely in his right to rule and in his ability to defend the laws and liberties of his people by his actions. They show a man who was to meet his fate with a dignity and bravery which impressed friend and foe alike. Charles was buried in an unmarked vault in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. Normally that would be the end of the story, but when workmen accidentally broke into the vault in the early years of the 19th century, his coffin was found and opened in the presence of the Prince Regent. The exhumation revealed how the body of the King had been prepared for burial, which enables a comparison to be made between his and other royal burials of this period.

Transport in Ancient Egypt by Robert B. Partridge Transport in Ancient Egypt, Paperback (January 1996)

Examining all aspects of transport in Ancient Egypt, both on land and on water, this work shows how, without the Nile, Egypt would be no more than a desert. The river was far more than just a source of water; it was the main highway through the country, a feature which was exploited to the full.

Faces of Pharaohs by Robert B. Partridge Faces of Pharaohs, Paperback (January 1994)

At the end of the 19th century, two tombs were discovered at Luxor which contained the mummies of some of Egypt's greatest Pharaohs and members of their families and courts. This book includes a detailed description of each mummy and coffin, and brings together all the photographs taken.

UK Kirkus Review » Last year saw the 350th anniversary of the death of Charles I, the only monarch in British history to be judicially murdered by his people. This book tells the story of Charles' last days. It explains the events which brought him to account for his actions in a court of law and gives a detailed account of the defence in which he resolutely justified the legitimacy of his rule. Partridge describes the spectacle of the king's execution, his burial in an unmarked vault and the accidental discovery and exhumation of his body in the early 19th century. The latter affords a remarkable insight into royal burials of the period. Here we have momentous events engagingly related. (Kirkus UK)
