Off the Record by Sean Sennett
Established in 1979, Time Off was the first free music/ entertainment weekly in Australia. Here are some of the best interviews and articles from the magazine's first thirty years - from bands on the cusp of greatness to megastars at the height of their powers. Far from regurgitating industry marketing copy, Time Off had a fiercely independent and wry voice. Off the Record reflects this, offering a unique insight into recent music history: Powderfinger return from their first-ever Sydney shows, Nick Cave name-checks his literary heroes, and Neil Finn worries that Crowded House's new album might be a little too dark, while elsewhere Kurt Cobain dives into Dave Grohl's drum kit (and sprains his wrist in the process). Australian bands, from the Saints to the Grates and the Hilltop Hoods, are featured, but the international focus is strong too, from the Rolling Stones and Sonic Youth to Oasis and the White Stripes. Off the Record is the must-have indie book about all things music.

Book Review: Off the Record by Sean Sennett - Reviewed by Boomer (20 Nov 2010) The free weekly street press is a bible of sorts for music lovers around Australia. While the quality of writing and editing in these papers is sometimes frustratingly bad, the street press informs music lovers of weekly gigs and CD releases, and promotes bands via interviews and gig advertisements. Sean Sennett, editor of Time Off magazine (Brisbane’s street paper since the mid-70s) and Simon Groth have compiled a selection of ‘best of ’ band interviews. Beginning with Hunters and Collectors in 1986 and moving chronologically through almost 100 interviews to Angus and Julia Stone in 2010, Off the Record covers vast ground. It can be dipped into at any page but a chronological read provides a fascinating look at how the music industry has changed over the years, from vinyl to CDs through to the influence of iTunes and myspace. Personal favourites in this collection include Jello Biafra discussing Queensland’s censorship laws and the confiscation... » Read all 1 book reviews for Off the Record by Sean Sennett |
