Pieces for the Left Hand, Paperback (March 2005)
A student's suicide note is not what it seems. A high-school football rivalry turns absurd-and deadly. A much-loved cat seems to have been a different animal all along. A pair of identical twins aren't identical at all - or even related. A man finds his own yellowed birth announcement inside a bureau bought at auction.

"'Masterpiece' would be an exaggeration, but only a small one."-Andrew Ervin, Washington Post Book World
UK Kirkus Review » Award-winning novelist Lennon's follow-up to The Funnies also centres on the dysfunctional relationships within one family in this case the Persons, who struggle to raise sheep on a ranch on the Great Plains. One after another they try to escape from the Plains, but none of them succeeds; each is drawn inexorably back, as though the landscape itself has them on a leash. Blighted by tragedy, Icelandic immigrant Asta succeeds in keeping her favourite son Grant out of World War II, only to lose him to an Atlantic fishing boat. When her death and his father's mysterious disappearance pull Grant back to the family ranch, he finds a failing business and forges a troubled alliance with his only surviving brother, the self-absorbed and vindictive Max. He's also being stalked by a dead man a ghost that haunts the interstices between sleep and consciousness and whose identity remains a mystery until the novel's terrifying climax. Beautifully written and realized, the novel is also a love story; between the solitary Grant and his brother's girl, the lonely Sophia; between undiscovered artist Max and the indifferently cruel landscape that gives him life. In part a family saga, in part a psychological study, On the Night Plain is also an elegy for a pioneering way of life that all too often ended in disappointment and disaster. (Kirkus UK)
