Open Society by George Soros
Book DescriptionGeorge Soros is a legend in the world of finance. His Quantum Fund has been the best performing investment fund in history and his foundations have helped re-shape the post-Cold War world. In this thoroughly revised version of his international bestseller, George Soros reconsiders his analysis in the light of recent economic events. We need to improve our international arrangements to match our increasing economic interdependence. Soros proposes that the open societies of the world should form an alliance for the dual purpose of fostering the development of open society within individual countries, and to lay the groundwork for a global open society by strengthening international institutions and rules of behaviour. Whilst the hardback edition emphasised the financial side of the system, the paperback adds more weight to its political aspects. Offering brilliant solutions based on years of Soros's own experience as a financier and philanthropist, THE CRISIS OF GLOBAL CAPITALISM is essential reading for anyone involved with the new economy - that is, all of us.

UK Kirkus Review » The fact that this book is, by its author's own effective admission, out of date, having been rushed into print when further revisions could have been made is at once a problem and a strength. The book is a revised version of The Crisis of Global Capitalism, published in 1998. The author is an almost deified guru of all thing financial; his Quantum fund has been the best performing investment in history. Soros describes the book as a statement of personal philosophy, yet one that is designed to serve as a guide to action. It is a snapshot which offers a view of how dynamic things seem, and how they should be regarded, at the moment of writing. This view of the book is reinforced by the author's description of it as 'his life's work' to be changed and amended as time goes by. The new edition starts with an admission that the level of doom predicted for the future in the earlier volume was overstated, and as a result has a more optimistic feel. It reviews the economic scene, but is the work of a practitioner rather than an academic economist. Where solutions to recent economic difficulties are suggested, they have a practical rather than theoretical feel. It is not an easy read but its reading repays the effort. The descriptions and analysis of recent history are clear and fascinating. Ultimately it is a very personal view of both the financial world and the political environment within which it operates. Soros may be wrong again, but - for the moment - his view is worthy of attention. (Kirkus UK)
