Oriental Theatre by Philip Freund
Book DescriptionPlays, operas and dances have developed in infinite variety, richness and colour throughout the countries of the East over the past two thousand years, yet relatively little knowledge of them has passed to the West. In this second volume of Stage by Stage series Philip Freund takes us beyond the barriers of culture and language to introduce us to the theatrical traditions and stagecraft of India, China, Japan, Korea and the many independent lands surrounding them. He describes the challenges that exponents of both Eastern and Western drama are facing as our cultures clash as never before and at the same time demonstrates how universal is the impulse to dramatize our experience. This comprehensive account will help Western audiences to gain a better understanding of Oriental drama and will greatly enrich the resources available to those who work in the theatre. Oriental Theatre is the second volume in the Stage by Stage series, a monumental history written over the past thirty years by Professor Philip Freund. The product of vast learning, enormous research and, above all, a passion for theatre, these volumes represent a unique and extraordinary achievement in the literature of the stage.

Laughter and Grandeur, Hardback (May 2008)
Part of the "Stage by Stage" series, this work is the study of theatre in the 'Age of Baroque', the exciting period from the last decades of the seventeenth century to the early years of the nineteenth. It offers an account of what happened on stage above the sputtering, smoky footlights - a mere two rows of candles - and behind the scenes.
Dramatis Personae, Hardback (January 2006)
Examines "Passion Plays", "Mysteries and Moralities" as well as the folk farces that flourished during the Middle Ages. This work discusses developments during the Renaissance in Italy such as the commedia dell'arte, as well as exalted musical innovations culminating in operas and ballets.
Birth of Theatre, Hardback (June 2003)View all books by Philip Freund
A chronicle of world theatre from primitive rites and enactments of myths to contemporary drama. It differs from anything else in the field in that it comprises not only playwrights, but opera and composers, musical comedy, ballet, modern dance, choreographers, circuses, theatre architects, scene design, puppetry, and more.
