Past the Shallows by Favel Parrett
Book DescriptionHarry and Miles live with their father, an abalone fisherman, on the south-east coast of Tasmania. With their mum dead, they are left to look after themselves. When Miles isn't helping out on the boat they explore the coast and Miles and his older brother, Joe, love to surf. Harry is afraid of the water. Everyday their dad battles the unpredictable ocean to make a living. He is a hard man, a bitter drinker who harbours a devastating secret that is destroying him. Unlike Joe, Harry and Miles are too young to leave home and so are forced to live under the dark cloud of their father's mood, trying to stay as invisible as possible whenever he is home. Harry, the youngest, is the most vulnerable and it seems he bears the brunt of his father's anger.

Book Review: Past the Shallows by Favel Parrett - Reviewed by sudy01 (14 Jul 2011)
This is a fantastic book intimately involving two young brothers and their powerful, individual fear.
The book is set in Tasmania and the environment is vividly described by this new and exciting author. The brothers live with their fisherman father who has his own fear and demons to manage and has no idea how to support or help his sons. Each of the boys is constantly fearful of their father and each has their own method of managing this fear. Greater even than their father are their individual fears of being forced into working with their father on the fishing boat, and a terror of the water and of seasickness.
There are some truly moving moments in this book and the ability to overcome fear when faced with an even greater terror is powerfully demonstrated.
I found this an easy to read, totally absorbing and insightful book which I would not hesitate to recommend to all. I hope it is not too long before we are blessed with another book from this terrific new author.
