Pathology and Identity by Roland Littlewood
Book DescriptionThe first new religion in the Caribbean since Rastafari, the Earth People draw on West African sources, assert a renascent African identity, and celebrate female creativity. They argue that Black people are the guardians of a natural environment, which is constantly under threat from European science. In this 1993 book, Dr Littlewood, who is both a psychiatrist and a social anthropologist, criticizes received ideas about pathology and creativity. The founder's ideas emerged in her experience of cerebral disease, and Dr Littlewood shows how the Earth People reinterpret radical personal experiences to build a community. While naturalistic and personalistic interpretations of human life are both valid and necessary, neither can be reduced to the other.

Sadness, Depression and the Dark Night of the Soul, Paperback (January 2017)
This ground-breaking book contemplates how some religious individuals and communities conceptualise severe sadness and emotional distress, which might otherwise be described as pathological, as an essential ingredient for spiritual development. It explores the implications this may have for clergy and psychiatrists seeking to understand sadness.

A 1993 anthropological study of the Earth People, a new Caribbean religion led by Mother Earth.
Religion, Agency, Restitution, Paperback (June 2001)
There exists a close relationship between the explanations of misfortune, reconciliation, and restitution in the historical - and other - religions and in therapeutics. This work examines the religious aspect in systems of therapeutics, and the appearance of healing practices within social institutions that are generally regarded as religious.
Intercultural Therapy, Paperback (September 1999)» View all books by Roland Littlewood
There are many problems in working psychotherapeutically across cultures, with numerous examples of failure to understand cultural issues. For example, the ignorance of traditional family structures can lead to major diagnostic and therapeutic errors.
