Paul by Howard Brenton
Book DescriptionThe most famous conversion in history - when Saul became Paul on the road to Damascus - was a trick. It was actually Jesus appearing to him. Jesus did not die on the cross but was rescued and sheltered by his brother James, by Peter and by Peter's wife, Mary Magdalene. But they prefer to keep Paul in the dark because, although he is mistakenly preaching that Christ rose again, at least it keeps him busy and gets the Christian message out there...Now, imprisoned by Nero, Peter finally tells Paul the truth before they go to their deaths as the first Christian Martyrs...

Author Biography - Howard Brenton
Howard Brenton was born in 1942 in Portsmouth, where his father was a policeman and a lay preacher. He had written several plays for the Royal Court, the RSC, and the National before Romans in Britain (1980) was famously the cause of a (failed) prosecution by moral crusader, Mary Whitehouse. Pravda (1985 National), co-written with David Hare, was a brilliant satire on press tycoonery. His last main-stage project was Faust for the RSC (1995), since when he has been a lead writer on TV's Spooks.
