Picasso by David Lomas

Book Description

The name which predominates in the development of art throughout the twentieth century, and to which many of the revolutionary changes are ascribed, is that of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). Not only was he one of the most influential artists, he was also one of the most versatile. This beautifully produced book surveys the whole range of his paintings, from the haunting works of the Blue Period, to the brute power of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, the lyrical sweetness of his family portraits, the revolutionary developments of Cubism and the later manifold experimentations with form and colour. Roland Penrose's introductory essay on Picasso was first published in 1971, when the great master was still alive. Penrose was acclaimed in his own right as a painter, and his long friendship with Picasso gave him unique insight into his life and work. David Lomas has written a preface introducing us to the friendship between these two artists. He has also written notes to each full-page colour plate, discussing the picture in detail, making this a perfect introduction to the twentieth century's most famous artist.

US Kirkus Review » This biography of Picasso has many advantages over the numerous works dealing with that artist. Written by a man who is thoroughly fluent with modern painting, the author, a man of penetrating sympathy and articulate insight, has the advantage of having been intimately associated with the artist since 1936. In his analysis of Picasso he maintains a dynamic counterpoint in which the theme of life and work are so skillfully and closely explored and integrated that ultimately they stand inseparable. Writing in a style commensurately vigorous with the temperament of Picasso, Roland Penrose, who now is organizing a retrospective exhibit of the artist's work for the Tate gallery, offers a series of brilliant portraits of the emotional, political, national, and social events which shaped the canvas of Guernicas. Fully cognizant of the influence upon Picasso of his origin, his intense preoccupation with Spanish custom - the battle between life and death apotheosized in the bull fight - Penrose, in this biography, illustrated with two hundred photographs, presents a bold canvas of a titan, his immense contribution, and the inevitable marriage between a conscious artistic rationale and formidable dedication to life.
