Postcard from the Severn by Jan Dobrzynski
Book DescriptionFlowing for more than 200 miles, from the slopes of Plynlimon in Wales to the Bristol Channel, the Severn is the mightiest of British rivers - with a tidal range second only to the Yangtze! Known to the Romans as Sabrina and to the Welsh as Afon Hafren, it has for countless centuries been a source of food and employment, a boundary, a barrier, a trade route, a place of leisure and enjoyment, a haven for wildlife and an inspiration for artists and writers. It has been crossed by fords and ferries, bridged over and tunnelled under, canalised in places and left untouched in others; it has been witness to the beginnings of culture in these islands, to invasion and battle, and to the birth of the Industrial Revolution that shaped the very world in which we live. This book takes the reader on a journey, in words and pictures, along the entire length of this great waterway, through rolling hills and verdant plains, using images from more than 200 old postcards drawn from the authors' collections. It is a record of how the river once was, and how it was immortalised by earlier generations of photographers and artists, publishers, tourists and travellers.
