Racism in Europe by Neil MacMaster
Book DescriptionThe study of modern racism has tended to treat anti-Semitism and anti-black racism as separate and unconnected phenomena. This innovative study argues that a full understanding of the origins and development of racism in Europe after 1870 needs to examine the structure and interrelationships between the two dominant forms of prejudice. Contrary to expectation. anti-black racism was not confined to the colonial maritime nations of western Europe, but pepetrated even the rural societies of central and eastern Europe. Likewise, anti-Semitism could flourish even in the almost total absence of Jews. MacMaster explores the conditions under which modern political movements, faced with the crisis of modernity, began to draw upon and mobilise the negative stereotypes that, through the development of the mass media, had become almost universal features of popular culture. By weaving together the changing spatial and temporal dimensions of anti-Semitic and anti-black prejudice the study provides a fresh and more global framework for understanding modern racism.

Burning the Veil, Paperback (March 2012)
During the Algerian War the French army engaged in the 'emancipation' of Muslim women, to subvert the nationalist movement while inflicting widespread violence. This contradictory, catastrophic policy, as in contemporary Afghanistan and Iraq, revealed the failure of imposed Westernisation and triggered an Islamist backlash against women's rights.
Paris 1961, Paperback (February 2009)
For decades knowledge of the 1961 massacre of Algerian demonstrators by the Paris police was suppressed. This study investigates the roots of this violence within the colonial system and how the event was covered up until it resurfaced after the 1980s to become one of the most controversial issues in contemporary French politics.
Racism in Europe, Paperback (September 2001)
This study argues that a full understanding of the origins and development of racism in Europe after 1870 needs to examine the structure and inter-relationships between anti-Semitism and anti-black racism.
Colonial Migrants and Racism, Hardback (April 1997)» View all books by Neil MacMaster
A study of 'Third-World' migration into pre-war Europe. Attention is given to the relationship between the society of emigration, undermined by colonialism, and processes of ethnic organisation in the metropolitan context.
