Raymond Mason by Michael Edwards
Book DescriptionRaymond Mason, the English sculptor and painter born in 1922, has lived and worked in Paris since 1946. A close friend of Giacometti, Balthus and Bacon, he has established an international reputation chiefly through a number of monumental works in Paris, Montreal, New York, Washington, and his home town of Birmingham. Although his large retrospectives in Britain and in France attracted record-breaking attendances, the fact of living abroad, and of following his own path in defiance of passing fashions, has prevented his full recognition as an original artist of his generation. Often conceived on a large scale, and concerned with a wide variety of subjects having universal appeal, his works continue the line of narrative art, and recover the long tradition of polychrome, figurative sculpture. His art as a whole is sustained by a vivid and coherent body of ideas expressed in numerous essays, and while reclaiming the past it with new sculptural forms, and explores the limits of realismn and of figuration itself. In this book devoted to Mason's work, the author raises questions about the nature of art, and about its place in contemporary experience. He offers several interpretations, and a reflection on the implications of Mason's practice and theory.

NGOs, States and Donors, Paperback (September 2013)
Since the book was first published, NGOs have continued to rise in prominence, but our concerns have been little redressed. The new Preface and Afterword to this IPE Classic provide an up to date review of the debates on NGOs and the development sector that consolidate on this argument and look briefly at some of the reactions it has received.
Oxford Handbook of Civil Society, Paperback (July 2013)
Broadly speaking, The Oxford Handbook of Civil Society views the topic of civil society through three prisms: as a part of society (voluntary associations), as a kind of society (marked out by certain social norms), and as a space for citizen action and engagement (the public square or sphere).
Small Change, Paperback (January 2010)» View all books by Michael Edwards
A new movement is afoot that promises to save the world by applying the magic of the market to the challenges of social change. Its supporters argue that using business principles to solve global problems is far more effective than more traditional approaches. This book reveals that in reality, a market approach hurts more than it helps.
