After a spell reporting the Iraq War, Nicolas Rothwell returns to Australia, to explore the deserts and towns, sleepy coastline and hidden worlds of the north As he travels, his journey gathers momentum and finds a shape. He has unforgettable, even mystical encounters: with a nun, an explorer, a collector and a hunter. It becomes a quest - for knowledge and a sense of home - that builds to a stunning culmination. 4 star rating by Boomert - The Red Highway by Nicolas Rothwell 12 Jan 2010
Nicolas Rothwell, Walkley-award winning journalist and author of Another Country and Wings of the Kite-Hawk, literally revisits familiar territory in this haunting account of a journey through northern Australia. But here the focus is on Rothwell’s quest to reconnect with the landscape and make meaning of his own life. Having spent a year reporting in the Middle East, Rothwell, in the guise of the book’s nameless narrator, revisits the towns, deserts and coastline of the north. Along the way he looks up old friends and makes new ones, engaging them in weighty dialogues on nature, memory, spirituality, death and art. He also reflects on his own experiences, and those of past explorers of the north--most notably the Czech artist Karel Kupka--who were similarly drawn to and bewitched by this part of the country. The Red Highway is essentially a series of interconnected conversations: Rothwell’s dialogues with his travelling companions, living and dead; with the landscapes--and with himself. Readers anticipating a conventional travel story may find it a bit ponderous. Others will be captivated by this W G Sebald-esque hybrid of road trip, personal memoir, and philosophical essay.
