Render to Caesar by Christopher Bryan
Book DescriptionIn this book, Christopher Bryan reexamines the attitude of the early Church toward imperial Rome. Choosing a middle road, he says that Jesus and the early Christians did indeed have a critique of the Roman superpower - a critique that was broadly in line with the entire biblical and prophetic tradition. One cannot worship the biblical God, the God of Israel, he says, and not be concerned about justice, including international justice, here and now. On the other hand, Bryan does not think that the biblical tradition challenges human power structures by attempting to dismantle them or replace them with other power structures. Instead, he says, it consistently confronts such structures with the truth about their origin and purpose. Their origin is that God permits them. Their purpose is to serve God's glory by promoting God's peace and God's justice. As Bryanu puts it, "the prophetic tradition subverts 'the powers that be' by persistently demanding that they do their job."

Listening to the Bible, Hardback (December 2013)
Christopher Bryan reflects on the often-difficult relationship between academic study of the Bible and the Church, and suggests a way forward in which scientific questions are not to be ignored, but in asking them we are not to ignore the texts' setting-in-life, which is and has always been the believing community.
Resurrection of the Messiah, Hardback (May 2011)
Bryan combines literary, historical, and theological approaches in this study of the doctrine of the Resurrection. Throughout, Bryan exhibits a willingness to face hard questions as well as an appropriate reverence for a faith that for almost two thousand years has enabled millions of people to lead lives of meaning and grace.
And God Spoke, Paperback (January 2002)
And God Spoke offers essential guidelines for everyone who wonders about the authority of the Bible, and who wants to read it with attentiveness and understanding.
Preface to Romans, Hardback (November 1999)» View all books by Christopher Bryan
Christopher Bryan aims to show which literary type or genre would have been seen by Paul's contemporaries as being exemplified in the letter to the Romans. He also examines Paul's attitude and approach to the Jewish bible and makes comparison with other texts from Paul's time, place and milieu.
