Description
Nina, Meredith and Annie have been friends for a long, long time. Elegant Meredith, motherly Nina and the determinedly single Annie are as unlikely companions as you could find. But like a matched set of 1950's kitchen canisters of Flour, Sugar and Tea, they always seem to end up together. Now each is facing the various trials of middle age: divorces, less than satisfactory marriages, teenage kids, careers going nowhere. One night, over one too many Flaming Sambuccas during a reunion dinner, they somehow find themselves agreeing to take a road trip to Byron Bay in a RoadMaster Royale mobile home, to attend Meredith's daughter's wedding. Fights and friendship, tears and laughter - not to mention the possibility of finding Mr. Right along the way - this trip might tear them apart or it might just save their lives.

0 star rating by Boomert - Roadside Sisters by Wendy Harmer 11 Jan 2010
Three women, friends from the ‘old’ days but distanced now by families, jobs and life choices, take to the road in an Elvis-festooned caravan in Harmer’s latest novel, Roadside Sisters. Nina is a footballer’s wife with three sons and no space to call her own. Meredith provides interiors for other women’s houses, giving her life meaning by differentiating between ecru and beige tablecloths. And Annie, the youngest of the bunch, is divorced, disillusioned and drunk. Once close friends, these women no longer seem to have anything in common, but when Nina bullies them into a trip from Melbourne to Byron Bay in a misguided search for an ‘Oprah moment’, they find themselves agreeing. A novel about getting lost to find yourself, and the often misunderstood treasure of having friends who knew you back when, occasionally slips into schmaltz and sets up paradigm shifts that are never followed through. These minor flaws, however, can be overlooked for the humour, readability and general feel-good tone. Roadside Sisters is easy and light, perfect for the beach, or with a cocktail on a hot summer night.
