Rrose Is a Rrose Is a Rrose by Jennifer Blessing
Book DescriptionThis book, published on the occasion of an exhibition organized by the Guggenheim Museum, presents photographically based artworks - portraits, self-portraits, and photomontagesin which the gender of the subjects is highlighted through performance for the camera as well as through technical manipulation of the image. In many of the works, photography's strong aura of realism and objectivity promotes a fantasy of total gender transformation. In other pieces, the photographic representation articulates an incongruity between the posing body and its assumed costume. Among the photographers represented are Cecil Beaton, Brassai, Claude Cahun, Marcel Duchamp, Hannah Hoch, George Platt Lynes, Man Ray, and Madame Yevonde (all of whom were active between 1920 and 1940) and, working after 1968, Janine Antoni, Matthew Barney, Nan Goldin, Lyle Ashton Harris, Jurgen Klauke, Robert Mapplethorpe, Christian Marclay, Annette Messager, Pierre Molinier, Yasumasa Morimura, Catherine Opie, Lucas Samaras, Cindy Sherman, Katharina Sieverding, Inez van Lamsweerde, and Andy Warhol.

Books By Author Jennifer Blessing
Photo-Poetics: an Anthology, Paperback (October 2015)
Presenting a new trend in contemporary photography, this volume offers an opportunity to define the concerns of a younger generation of artists and contextualize them within the history of art and culture.
Francesca Woodman, Hardback (October 2011)
Francesca Woodman began photographing at the age of thirteen. By the time she enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1975, she was already an accomplished photographer. This catalogue offers a reconsideration of Woodman for the twenty-first century. It intends to paint a fuller picture of her oeuvre.
Haunted, Hardback (March 2010)
Much of contemporary photography and video seems haunted by the past, by ghostly apparitions that are reanimated in reproductive media, as well as in live performance and the virtual world. This title examines the myriad ways photographic imagery is incorporated into practice.
True North, Hardback (February 2008)» View all books by Jennifer Blessing
Investigates the legacy of northern Romantic landscape painting in contemporary photography, sculpture and video. This book presents artists' reveries on place, which transform the idealism of the Romantic tradition through the specificity of photographic representation.
