Russia, Freaks and Foreigners by James Macdonald
Book Description"Russia, Freaks and Foreigners" is a collection of three thematically linked plays set against the backdrop of a fractured, post-Soviet Russian society. The performance texts use comedy and an assortment of 'freakish' portrayals to explore what it means to be a member of society.Written by acclaimed playwright James MacDonald, who has cerebral palsy, these performance texts critique accepted notions of normality within authority, offering various models of difference - physical, cultural, and moral - and their stories of dislocation. Their themes, contextualized here by companion essays, expand the boundaries of British drama and connect to the comic grotesque tradition by giving the "abnormal" a broad appeal. The plays use post-Soviet culture to explore standard notions of difference, particularly physical and cultural. To date, MacDonald is one of only a few severely disabled playwrights to have his work staged and he deals with issues rarely covered in drama. "Russia, Freaks and Foreigners" is a daring portrayal of disability from the inside. It deals with issues little covered in drama. It offers a daring portrayal of disability from the inside. It provides inside knowledge of both Russians and disability by one of the few disabled playwrights whose work is regularly staged.

When Globalization Fails, Paperback (February 2016)
Is globalization a recipe for war? In the nineteenth century, liberals exulted that the spread of commerce would usher in prosperity and peace, but these dreams were dashed by imperial squabbles, the carnage of 1914-18, and the protectionism, depression, and conflict that followed. In the wake of World War II, the globalists tried again.
