Cliff McNish's third dazzling stand-alone novel - a brilliant supernatural thriller to haunt and thrill readers of BREATHE and ANGEL.
UK Kirkus Review » Book Two of the Doomspell trilogy sees Rachel, who fought and killed the wicked witch Dragwena on the planet Ithrea in the first book, pursued by Dragwena's vengeful mother, Heebra. The story opens with Rachel back on planet Earth with her brother Eric and Morpeth, Dragwena's former servant rescued from Ithrea. Morpeth - although now hundreds of years old - has been given his childhood back by the great wizard Larpskendya, and is living ostensibly as a boy with Rachel's family. As Morpeth comes to terms with having lost his magical powers, Rachel must deal with the magic awakened in her. She is having trouble controlling her spells, which seep out through her eyes and take over in her dreams when she will not use them purposefully. However she is soon to need them, as Heebra plots malevolent purposes for the magic now percolating through the children of Earth. Rachel's ability to fly and to shift location at will and Eric's talent for destroying spells are crucial to the coming conflict. The scary Heiki, a pale child who readily accepts Heebra's purposes, is trained to do battle with Rachel, aided by a gang of children who abduct Eric and Morpeth as part of the trap being laid for Rachel - and for Larpskendya. McNish imbues his story with sinister descriptions and plausible details. The writing is atmospheric and the plot gripping, as the children battle against awesome forces, often within themselves; armies of witches and wizards are pitted against each other, children fight children and turn against grown-ups. The climax, an appalling contest at the North Pole, tests all the children's courage and resolve. Its resolution, via a butterfly-loving toddler, may stretch the credulity of adults but ties in perfectly with McNish's underlying message. Ages 9-12 (Kirkus UK)
