Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker by Ray Desmond
Book DescriptionSir Joseph Hooker is remembered as an eminent Victorian botanist and one of Charles Darwin's closest collaborators. Many gardeners and lovers of rhododendrons know of his plant collecting expedition in the Himalayas, but few are aware of his participation in Sir James Clark Ross's epic voyage to Antarctica in 1839-43, of his to Syria and Lebanon in 1860, to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco in 1871, and to the Rockies and California in 1877. At some risk to his own safety and health he discovered many new species of plants introduced a number of attractive flowers into British gardens. Hooker was also an amateur artist who obsessively sketched landscape, flora and, occasionally, people and buildings. Ray Desmond has written a fascinating biography of a remarkable man.

UK Kirkus Review » The great Victorian botanist Sir Joseph Hooker is mainly known for his collaboration with Charles Darwin on theories of the distribution of ploants and for his own extensive plant collecting expedition to the Himalayas. This new and interesting book, however, shows him to be a much more ambitious and adventurous explorer than had hitherto been supposed. He took part in Sir James Clark Ross's epic voyage to the Antarctic (1839-43), where he nearly drowned, and also visited Syria, Lebanon, the Atlas Mountains and the American Rockies in search of new species. Like many of his contemporaries who ventured overseas in search of scientific enlightenment or to propogate the Christian faith, he was also discreetly encouraged to use his talents in the service of the burgeoning British Empire. In his case, his surveying skills, which hed to the production of the first map of Sikkim, probably helped the British army to consolidate its hold over north-east India. His primary motives and achievements, however, were scientific and his constant curiosity, careful observation and intrepid exploration made him an outstanding scientific traveller. (Kirkus UK)
