I have just finished A Song In The Daylight. I could not put it down and it once again confirms to me what a wonderful author Paullina Simons. There was so much to think about I would just like to discuss the story line with another person. There were several truths that came to me in this book. Larissa and Jared were well to do Americans but that left their marriage vulnerable to his workaholism to maintain their lifestyle and to her "have everthing that money can buy" boredom. Her personality of impecable manners and the American smile which says everything in fine meant that in avoiding conflict Larissa and Jared never really bared their needs to each other. Kai also avoided any conflict and so the politeness bred an unreal world in which there was no conflict and honesty about how they felt. There final showdown in which they were brutally honest had catastrophic result for them both. A relationship in which people never argue or fight is one with danger warning lights. The sexual intensity and hunger they felt for each other can happen made all the more exciting by it's forbideness. It led to a false covering up or being able to deal with loyalty. That Larissa could leave behind her family was shocking but I am sure it can happen. When in too deep she was able to rationalise it away. I liked the character of the psycharist Kavanagh and the Priest Emilio both who made me squirm with their insight into Larissas behaviour. They both could have lectured her but they listened and tried to help her see how her descisions were ruining her life. The final chapters when Larissa blindly followed Kai to the most barren part of Australia and still tried to humour him and be polite were sickening and when he finally spoke the truth andtheir lives shattered made me realise how important honesty and truthfulness are in a relationship. Lots to think about but I just wish I could talk to someone who has read the book! This is my first book review.

Paullina Simons was born in Leningrad in 1963. As a child she emigrated to Queens, New York, and attended colleges in Long Island. Then she moved to England and attended Essex University, before returning to America. She lives in New York with her husband and children.
