Description
For the artists and writers in this book - Claude Monet, Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell, Karen Blixen, Ernest Hemingway, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso and Emily Kame Kngwarreye - the act of recreating Eden was a life-changing, art-making, healing rite that becomes both a map of their careers and an index of their subject matter. What unites these artists and writers is a journey of return, of rediscovery, that leads them to the creation of a personal paradise. Upon arriving at that place, whether it was Georgia O'Keeffe in New Mexico, Monet in Giverny or Picasso in Provence, iconic new work emerged, inspired by that terrain, from its light, its colours, its landscape. Each of these artists had recovered the place they'd been unconsciously seeking for years. In this engaging and ground-breaking book, Janine Burke explores how art and landscape, love and companionship, home and garden are entwined. Nature is culture, and its most insistent inspiration.

5 star rating by Boomert - Source by Janine Burke 06 Nov 2009
Accomplished art historian and author of the highly acclaimed Australian Gothic: A Life of Albert Tucker, Janine Burke, has created another masterpiece in Source, with her in-depth research, writing style and outstanding presentation. She has brought the understanding of art and artists, writers and writing closer, for a wider audience, with the exquisite analysis of selected subjects including Monet, O’Keeffe, Picasso, Hemingway, Woolf, Pollock, Blixen and Emily Kame Kngwarreye, among others. The essential role that place, nature, and the landscape play as a source of inspiration and creativity is Burke’s common thread, and the core of healing for all featured artists. These natural elements flow through each biography, transforming Burke’s lucid, lyrical language into visual reels and magnificent canvases. Windows are also opened onto the unconventional family units and private lives, loves, passions, infidelities and predilections of this group; what made them famous, and what destroyed them. It includes several full-page pictures of each subject. This outstanding book will attract those interested in any form of art, biography and travel, and the historical and social background of the midto- late 1800s through to the post WWII years.
