State of Play by Robin Nelson
Book DescriptionRobin Nelson's State of play up-dates and develops the arguments of his influential TV Drama In Transition (1997). It is equally distinctive in setting analusis of the aesethetics and compositional principles of texts within a broad conceptual framework (technologies, institutions, economics, cultural trends). Tracing "the great value shift from conduit to content" (Todreas, 1999), Nelson is relatively optimistic about the future quality of TV Drama in a global market-place. But, characteristically taking up questions of worth where others have avoided them, Nelson recognizes that certain types of "quality" are privileged for viewers able to pay, possibly at the expense of viewer preference worldwide for "local" resonances in television. The mix of arts and cultural studies methodologies makes for an unusual and insightful approach.

Practice as Research in the Arts, Hardback (March 2013)
At the performance turn, this book takes a fresh 'how to' approach to Practice as Research, arguing that old prejudices should be abandoned and a PaR methodology fully accepted in the academy. Nelson and his contributors address the questions students, professional practitioner-researchers, regulators and examiners have posed in this domain.
Stephen Poliakoff on Stage and Screen, Paperback (May 2011)
Professor Nelson's companion considers the stage and screen work of one of the great auteurs of our present age. Ranging across Poliakoff's work for the theatre, his early TV dramas and his high-profile work for the screen since 1998, this is an invaluable study of a unique theatre, film and TV talent.

How does corn grow? Farmers plant small seeds called kernels in fields. The kernels sprout and grow into tall stalks with ears of corn. The ears are picked, husked, and cooked until the corn is tender and juicy enough to eat.
