At twenty-three years old, forensic archaeologist Courtney Brkic joined a UN-contracted team excavating mass grave sites in eastern Bosnia. She was drawn there by her family history- her father is Croatian - and she was fluent in the language.
UK Kirkus Review » Sons and fathers missing, women raped by men who were once neighbours or even friends, homes destroyed, humans and animals ill-treated and starving: the tales of those who survive by whatever means and of those who lose everything are told here by Courtney Angela Brkic, a Croatian Catholic now living in America, whose father grew up in Sarajevo. These are stories of the war in Yugoslavia, the results of which were seen first-hand by Brkic in her work with refugees in Croatia and in Bosnia, where, as a forensic archaeologist, she was involved in the exhumation of mass graves. She describes the indescribable and writes about the perpetrators of horrors: snipers, brutal soldiers and spies and the results of their activities; she writes, too, about people who have to bear what seems unbearable, spending months underground being shelled constantly, fighting, wounded and unable to work, or facing persecution because of a father's crimes, yet she does not single out one particular group or religion to defend or condemn. Christians, Muslims and Jews, natives of the different areas that were once Yugoslavia, are all damaged in one way or other by the effects of war. Even those who try to get away find that there is no escape, and outsiders are drawn in. Small, telling details, like the chair that a mother always puts at the table for her missing son or the euphemisms used to cloak 'ethnic cleansing' are moving and shocking. Dark and unrelenting as these stories are, they are written with insight and compassion; sweet memories of past relationships and past events act on the one hand as a touching contrast to the sufferings of the present, on the other they underline starkly how human beings can lose sight of their humanity.
