UK Kirkus Review » Following the huge success of The Story of Scotland, which won the Saltire Society/TES Award for Educational Publications and the Scottish Arts Council Children's Book Award, the authors have done the same for the history of Ireland. With a combination of cartoon-style, humorous pictures with funny captions and bite-sized chunks of information, it manages to convey a lot of information in an attractive format. After briefly explaining the formation of the island at the end of the Ice Age, it quickly reaches the influx of Celts in 600BC that formed the basis of Ireland's Gaelic culture. The arrival of St Patrick and the conversion of the people to christianity and subsequent Viking and Norman invasions are also swiftly dealt with. The rest of the story chronicles the complex relationship between Ireland and the English and makes a good job of explaining the existence of the deep religious devisions in Ireland today. The simple language and humour will make this sometimes difficult subject appeal to children. (9+ yrs) (Kirkus UK)
