Surviving the Volcano by Stanley Williams

Book Description

The true-life adventure story of one of the world's leading volcano experts. In 1993, Stanley Williams was investigating Galeras, what he thought was a dormant volcano in Colombia. But it blew, killing nine members of his expedition; against all odds Williams survived. This book is both the scientific story of how human beings have tried to tame these pipelines to the centre of the earth and the terrifying tale of what it is like to be caught up in a volcanic explosion.

UK Kirkus Review » In January 1993 a group of geologists exploring Galeras, an apparently dormant Colombian volcano, were taken unawares by a dramatic eruption of gas and burning boulders that left nine of them for dead. Among the five survivors, Stanley Williams - the trip's organizer, based at Arizona State University - found himself with a smashed head (his brain exposed), two broken legs and severe burns; but far from succumbing to predicted brain-damage, he was well enough to give interviews in less than three weeks. Almost immediately, however, his brief period of stardom began to give way to intense and lasting controversy, over what exactly had happened on the disastrous expedition and whether the vulcanologists should have known that it was not safe because the level of sulphur dioxide gas was low; the more general view was that it was unsafe because there had been unusual seismic activity for some months previously. Here Williams gives his version of things: whatever the truth, his description of what it is like to be caught up in the full, furious force of nature is terrifying - definitely best experienced vicariously from the safety of an armchair.
