Texts, Ideas and the Classics by S. J. Harrison
Book DescriptionThis book aims to promote a simple idea: that, in the contemporary context of the study and interpretation of classical literature at universities, traditional classical scholarship and modern theoretical ideas need to work with each other in the common task of the interpretation of texts. Such dialogue and co-operation is not merely desirable; it is essential to ensure the survival and relevance of the study of classical literature in the twenty-first century. The purpose of this book is protreptic, to speak both to the sceptical and non-sceptical and to suggest to both the importance of the topic. The topics selected were chosen by a panel of distinguished practitioners as traditional areas of classical literary studies where the importance of co-operation of theory and scholarship could be shown in different ways by scholars who ranged widely in their views: 'literary language', 'narrative', 'genre', 'historicism', and 'reception and history of scholarship'.

Louis MacNeice: The Classical Radio Plays, Hardback (June 2013)
This volume presents 11 radio scripts written and produced by Louis MacNeice over the span of his career at the BBC. This selection, all but one of which is published for the first time, illustrates the various ways that MacNeice re-worked ancient Greek and Roman history and literature for radio broadcast.
Framing the Ass, Hardback (June 2013)
This book studies one of the few novels from the Roman Empire, Apuleius' Metamorphoses or Golden Ass. Harrison shows that this work is one of remarkable literary complexity. The volume traces some of the history of the novel's criticism and offers a detailed analysis of its key sections and issues.
Generic Enrichment in Vergil and Horace, Paperback (March 2011)» View all books by S. J. Harrison
Why did the years c.39-19 BC in Rome produce such a rich range of complex poetical texts, above all in the work of Vergil and Horace? S. J. Harrison argues that a vital aspect of this literary flourishing was generic enrichment, the interaction of different poetic genres, and illustrates this by analysis of key passages in the two poets' works.
