This is What We Said
This book is the outcome of a report called 'Will They Be Heard?' launched in November 2009 by the Hon. Malcolm Fraser. Using pictures and quotations taken from footage of actual consultations at Bagot, Ampilatwatja, Utopia and Yirrkala, this book provides a graphic account of the depth of frustration and despair of many Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory regarding the intervention. It is therefore tragic that legislation, to be debated in Parliament in early 2010, pays scant attention to the views expressed by many Aboriginal people during the consultation process of 2009. Also included are quotes on the Intervention from other well-known Australians and UN representatives. Project supported by the Ron Gray Human Rights Foundation.

City's Outback by Gillian Cowlishaw
Follows the fraught, exciting and painful process of getting to know others, in this case Australian Aborigines in the suburbs who are already known through shocking images and worrying statistics. This book is about the intimacy of the encounter, the practical and ethical dilemmas of research and the fun of engagement in the city's outback.
You Call it Desert - We Used to Live There. by Pat Lowe
While spending time in the red heart of the country that had been home to the Walmajarri people for thousands of years, Pat Lowe and her partner, Walmajarri man Jimmy Pike, recorded Pike's stories through his painting and Lowe's writing. Pat explored the day-to-day lives of the desert dwellers and writes about their resourcefulness and ingenuity.
"It's Still in My Heart, This is My Country" by South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council
This is a history commissioned by the SWALSC to present as evidence at the Single Noongar Native Title Claim over metropolitan Perth and south-west WA. The single Noongar Claim hinged on the proof that the Noongar were a single unified people and not a number of unrelated groups as claimed by the state of Western Australia. » Have you read this book? Book Review: This is What We Said by - Reviewed by Bine (08 Aug 2010) This excellent book is of high quality and also includes a brief introduction about the NT Intervention. It reveals a desire for locally based solutions, rather than applying a top down approach. The comments from the Laynhapuy Homeland Mala Leaders at Yirrkala are particularly striking: "The problems our people face can be addressed through programs and funding targeted on a needs basis alone, under the Closing the Gap policy. We should not be subjected to special measures that separate us out or impose things on us without agreement. Our responses to your questions in this consultation must not be used by the Australian Government to argue for the continuation of the NTER, Intervention or justify what has been done to date." “This Is What We Said” is essential reading as it is mainly a book of quotes from Aboriginal people giving their own views on the Intervention. Giving voice to Aboriginal people from the Northern Territory is fairly... |
