Description
Cliff Hardy has never been much of a family man, so when he meets his second cousin Patrick Malloy it's like being hit with a left hook to the solar plexus - Malloy is his double. Cliff and his cousin become friends and travel to attend a gathering of the Irish Travell - the gypsy-like folk from whom they are descended. On their return, Malloy is brutally murdered - but was the shotgun blast intended for him or for Hardy? Hardy is de-licensed, semi-retired, but this investigation is personal. The plot becomes still more personal when Malloy's ex-wife, Sheila, comes on to the scene. Hardy has his own enemies and Malloy's to consider as he searches for the killer. Clues point in many directions - to Sheila's motives, to Malloy's suspect business dealings, to his time as a mercenary in Angola. The search takes Hardy north to a paramilitary training camp and south to a meeting of Traveller descendants in Kangaroo Valley. Other players have other interests and their playing style is ruthless.

4 star rating by Boomert - Torn Apart by Peter Corris 10 Dec 2009
It is amazing to think that we have been looking forward to the new Cliff Hardy since he first appeared in 1980. Cliff has aged, lost his licence, had a heart attack but he is still as resolute as ever in tracking down the wrongdoers. One of the enduring joys of the Cliff Hardy series is the Sydney locales and, in Torn Apart, Peter Corris throws in a side trip to Ireland, as well as some shonky business at a paramilitary training ground in northern NSW and a trip to Kangaroo Valley. All this travel revolves around Cliff meeting his lookalike second cousin Patrick Malloy and Malloy’s subsequent death by shotgun. The book moves along at a cracking pace and we get to meet a number of interesting characters both new and from the past. Once I started Torn Apart I could not put it down and hope that Cliff keeps on finding new cases to solve written in Peter Corris’ engaging style.
